W. NR. 1.1545
Characteristics
Carbon tool steel characterized by high hardness of hardening layer, high toughness and especially good insensitivity to hardening cracks. Further the steel is characterized by good ductility during the heat and good workability in the annealed state.
Suitability
For small, simple-shaped and less stressed machines for punching, drawing, forming, extrusion, pushing and cold-work cutting, auxiliary hardened components of extrusion machines and molds. Further the steel is used for forgings for rotary forging, small and simple or folded molds for mechanical working of plastic substances and rubber, tools for woodworking, manual marking dies, shear blades, transmission cutters, edges of weights, clamping tools etc.

Heat treatment of steel W.Nr. 1.1545
Way | Temperature [°C] | Procedure | |
---|---|---|---|
Forging | 800-1000 | Cool slowly in calm air or better e.g. in dry ash or other thermally-insulated material | |
Normalization | 790-810 | Cool in air | |
Soft annealing | 680-710 | Warm few hours (according to the size of object), mostly four hours are enough and cool slowly in the furnace | |
Annealing to lower tension | 600-650 | Warm 1 to 2 hours and cool slowly in the furnace | |
Hardening | in water | 750-770 | Small and shape-complicated objects |
770-830 | Big and simple objects | ||
in oil | 790-820 | Thin cross-sections of thickness up to 3 mm | |
Tempering | 180-300 | Cool in air, the degree of tempering is set by hardness and toughness of instrument according to the tempering chart |
Note
- Steel cannot be hardened in vacuum furnaces.
- Shape-complicated objects which are susceptible to hardening cracks have to be broken-hardened.
- After hardening into oil, cross-sections, which are hardened, achieve the hardness of about 62 HRC. Cross-sections thicker than 3 mm have a hardening irregular layer and are softer on the surface during hardening into oil.
